| Memphis in the Meantime |

Thanks for thinking about coming to the Bluff City! Lots going on all the time! Great music! Great food! Great attractions! Here’s a bit of what the Memphis Blues Society recommends you check out during your visit!
We suspect you will want to stay close to Beale St. So, there is a Hampton Inns & Suites one block north of Beale. One block further north is The Peabody, Radisson, Holiday Inn Select (all on Union). About 5-6 blocks further north of Beale on the Main St trolley line is a Springhill Suites (one of our personal favorites because you can get around on the trolley.....buck a ride). Residence Inn on Madison is very nice, right in the middle of several very good/very $ restaurants, such as Stella's, McEwen's, Madison Grill, and others.....
Dry ribs......Rendezvous......across Union from the Peabody, in the alley.
Wet ribs......Blues City Café….Beale & 2nd.
Thai........Sawaddi's.......one block west of the Peabody (toward the river)....from the Peabody
BBQ shrimp.......Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale.
Fried Chicken......Gus's.........South Main, I believe). Several years ago GQ listed the original Gus's as one of 10 places in the world you would want to travel to, to eat their fried chicken. This is one of the offspring of that original Gus's.....but, the chicken is indeed, killer!
Italian........Spindini's........South Main (on the trolley line)........oven fired.......yum........
Best Hamburger in Memphis.....Huey's......
just west of the Peabody on Union. Good entertainment on weekends….or
Neil’s (Madison & McLean….entertainment six nights a week……plus the MBS jam on first and third Thursdays each month.
Steak.......The Butcher Shop.......Front St....just south of Union.......huge steaks, and you can opt to cook your own!
Folk’s Folly…..on Mendenhall.
Attractions:
Tour the Stax museum......awesome.......
Gibson guitar factory/Gibson Lounge......one block south of Beale.....
FedEx Forum/Rock & Soul Museum.......
Sports…..see our Memphis Tigers (#2 in the NCAA for 2007-2008 season) if they are in town. We also have an NBA team, the Memphis Grizzlies. September-November catch Memphis University Tiger football!
Ride the trolley..........pretty neat......few cities have these vintage vehicles!
Peabody Ducks.......5:00 pm each afternoon......grand procession out of the Peabody fountain/lobby, to the elevator, back to their luxurious penthouse apartments. Why........? Haven't figured it out, but 400-500 people gather every afternoon for cocktails and to watch these guys. Get there 15 minutes or so early.......seriously.........they are a "draw"!
Civil Rights Museum.......housed in the Hotel Lorraine where ML King was assassinated.
Peabody Place.....behind the Peabody Hotel.......movies, shopping, Jillian's, Dan McGuinness' etc.
Center for Southern Folklore.........on Second, just south of Union (toward Beale)....look for The Daddy Mack Blues Band....hopefully they will be playing!
That ought to hold you for the first day...... :-)
On a serious note......you're downtown. Memphis, unfortunately has become pretty dangerous. Pay attention to your surroundings. At night, stay on Beale, or go to and from Beale via Main, Second and/or Third Streets, where they connect with Beale. Stroll the river or go to Tom Lee Park during daylight. It pains us to admit we have a growing "thug" situation downtown......lots of weekend cruising around the Beale St area you should prefer not to get caught in. Like any major city, we guess. Memphis has a LOT to offer.......but, be safe! |
